There are 1.36 CVs submitted per job posting in Doncaster, and 1.31 in Sheffield, compared with just 0.3 in Cambridge, analysis by the Centre for Cities think tank shows.

In Barnsley, there are 1.7 CVs sent per vacancy listed on the UK’s most visited job site Indeed, which is the seventh highest figure nationally but still well short of the 3.0 in Middlesbrough.

Researchers claim the Covid-19 crisis has widened the existing geographic inequality for jobseekers, making it even harder to find work in areas where the economy was already struggling.

More than 1.4 million CVs have been updated on Indeed since the lockdown began in March, they say, with vacancies plummeting.

“At the extremes, competition for each job in Middlesbrough is nine times greater than in Cambridge. Sunderland, Dundee and Luton also have large numbers of local jobseekers for each available job, while Oxford, Reading, Exeter, Bristol and London are among the places with the fewest local jobseekers per job posting,” said Elena Magrini and Pawel Adrjan, who carried out the study.

“Unsurprisingly, places where jobs are scarcer tend to have weaker economies. The 10 cities with the largest competition for jobs are on average 13 per cent less productive and have 36 per cent fewer people with high-level qualifications – a key indicator of success for a local economy – than the 10 cities with the least competition.”
