The City Region Business Awards are a unique event supported by all the region’s Chambers – for all the right reasons, according to The Star editor James Mitchinson.
The event unifies the business community across a huge area and is the one night a year when Sheffield City Region decides the best in business.
The ceremony is at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Thursday, July 2.
James Mitchinson said: “We’re a varied bunch in Sheffield City Region.
“All the towns have proud histories, are fiercely independent and have a strong identity, qualities that are the envy of many blander places across the country.
“The region is also geographically spread out, with Doncaster over there, Barnsley up there, Chesterfield down there and Rotherham still strongly Rotherham, despite being so close to Sheffield. This is in contrast to Manchester and Leeds which are much more of a nucleus with circles around them.
“Their chambers are similarly arranged into large entities covering more than one county, whereas South Yorkshire alone has three.
“Our region is also covered by a Local Enterprise Partnership, but a second one overlaps Chesterfield, D2N2, and Barnsley has a foot in another, Leeds City Region.
“Only the City Region Business Awards – backed by The Business magazine – serve and represent everyone.
“They supports the ethos of collaboration that has been a byword of business since Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership was created and they celebrate our finest firms while creating a platform for them to represent us to the wider world.”
The event, at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, pits the winners of business awards run by the four chambers in Sheffield City Region, and the Derbyshire Times, to reveal who is the ‘first among winners’.
This year, there are 14 categories. Each chamber provides a judge.
Gary Verity, Tour de Yorkshire hero and chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, is the speaker at the awards.
He said: “Sheffield City Region can be rightly proud of the part it played in staging the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in 2014. Both feats are enviable feathers in the cap. The success that this region has so enjoyed in recent times has its foundations firmly in the businesses and business owners of Yorkshire. It is they who underpin the huge steps this county has taken, and the accolades that Yorkshire has and continues to receive are a testament to their hard work and dedication.
“The City Region Business Awards give us all a chance to reflect and congratulate ourselves on what we have achieved, and indeed, what is to come. The city region is on the march, so let’s take this opportunity to raise a glass to the future.”
