Paul Blomfield says business rates are “not fit for purpose.”
The Sheffield Central MP was a member of the cross-party Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee which looked at the issue earlier this year and unanimously delivered the damning verdict.
And he gave his wholehearted backing to The Star’s campaign for a new and better system.
He said: “Congratulations to The Star for shining the spotlight on business rates and how we can support Sheffield’s traders.
“Since 2010 businesses have been hit by average rate rises of £1,500. The Government is planning to cut corporation tax cut for 80,000 large firms but this is the wrong priority. Labour would use this money to cut business rates for 1.5 million small firms.
“The way in which people do their shopping is changing, particularly driven by online retail, and the challenge for businesses, local authorities and the Government, as well as us as customers, is to make sure we all support our local businesses in the best way possible.”
Our parent company Johnston Press has launched a national campaign for an overhaul of business rates, an outdated formula which is crippling our High Streets.
