Business leaders in Barnsley and Rotherham have welcomed plans to ease congestion on the M1 between Aston and Chapeltown by using the hard shoulder as an extra lane.
Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce executive director Andrew Denniff said: “This proposal applies to the stretch of the motorway which runs right through the heart of the City Region and is a key route for business people and the general public travelling between Barnsley and Rotherham, and beyond.
“The development of this part of the M1 has been on the agenda of the chamber’s transport working group for several years.
“Developing the City Region’s infrastructure was also part of the business manifesto produced by the region’s chambers earlier this year, so it is pleasing to see the chamber’s lobbying in this area coming to fruition.”
Work on the £150 million scheme is due to begin before March and should be completed by the summer 2015.
