Caravan company hits five-year high

A caravan sales company has hit a five-year high after opening what it claims is the North’s largest showroom.

Yorkshire Caravans, on Doncaster Road in Bawtry, converted an empty warehouse and launched a new internet site to increase sales in and out of season.

The firm employs 46 and turnover this year is expected to hit £9m.

Jon Goulden, managing director, said: “We’ve weathered the recession and we’re hoping for a continuation of the staycation trend.

“Barclays funding has enabled us to transform an empty warehouse into the North’s largest caravan showroom and we’ve hit record sales for the first time in over five years”

The firm was was established in 1926 by petrol filling station owner Percy Smith who allowed a customer to store a caravan on his site for a couple of weeks.

It created so much interest Percy decided to contact the manufacturer and struck a deal to buy caravans.

Today the company sells more than 3,500 products.
