Business leaders and politicians across South Yorkshire have thrown their weight behind a campaign to encourage people to shop local.

Members of the region’s Federation of Small Businesses and John Healey, Labour MP for Wentworth and Dearne, have re-launched Keep Trade Local, urging shoppers to opt for independent businesses.

The campaign was originally set up five years ago in response to the flooding which hit South Yorkshire in 2007.

Contractors were brought into the region from far and wide to carry out the flood refurbishment, while local businesses were overlooked.

Since then, the Keep Trade Local campaign has broadened its scope to address wider issues. I

n a bid to keep the shop local message in people’s minds leaders held a re-launch event at the Holiday Inn Express in Manvers.

Gordon Millward, chairman of South Yorkshire Federation of Small Businesses, said: “We want to see people using independent businesses and celebrate the uniqueness and flavour they bring to their communities.

“Once a high street has fallen into decline the trend can be difficult to reverse.”
