Call for better deal for Sheffield children

Political parties are being urged by a Sheffield group to put children at the heart of their policies with the launch of a new manifesto.

Home-Start Sheffield works with vulnerable parents and children who are socially excluded, living in isolation, or facing multiple problems.

It has joined the organisation’s national network to launch All Our Children, a new policy shaped by the views of families, staff and volunteers.

The group works with children affected by changes in circumstances, unreliable employment and gaps in benefit payments, poor physical and mental health and housing problems, which can push families into crisis.

The manifesto says children need safe places to live and play, support when their parents suffer from a mental illness, and protection from hunger and poor nutrition.

Chief executive Jack Scott said: “These really are basic needs but many children are not getting the support they deserve.

“Home-Start’s manifesto shows why this is crucial and how we can all make it happen. What we are proposing will make a real difference to the lives of children.”
