Busy Sheffield bike repair shop closing to protect staff

Bike Rehab on Wellington Street will close its doors on Saturday April 4.

The four-strong outfit is on the list of businesses allowed to stay open during the coronavirus lockdown.

It had cut staffing to one and introduced a ‘contact free’ method of booking in bikes before wrapping handlebars and contact points.

It was fully booked as stir-crazy cyclists headed outside - the activity is one of the few permitted to prevent the spread of the disease.

Boss Alex Gunn had said they hoped to keep the business going as they had young families to support.

However, that has since changed. Now, all booked-in services would be honoured but no new ones.

He said: “We've had to make the tough decision to close. We felt it necessary to prioritise taking care of our families at this time.”

A company spokesman said: “Due to the escalation of the lockdown, we are no longer taking any new bookings, and will be closed from Saturday, April 4, until further notice.

“Thank you for all your support during this challenging time, and we look forward to returning even stronger later in the year.”
