Bolsover is going back to its historic roots to shape a brighter new future and draw in more tourists to boost its economy.
The Derbyshire town is being rejuvenated and turned into a tourist destination with the help of £750k of European regional development funding secured by Bolsover District Council.
The Discover Bolsover brand has been created and the town now has its own logo and website, www.discoverbolsover.co.uk, the first step in a campaign to highlight it as a destination.
It wants to build on the huge popularity of Grade I listed English Heritage site Bolsover Castle, and entice visitors to other historic attractions, the castle’s Conduit Houses, the Grade II listed New Bolsover Model Village, and the town entrenchments, a rare 12th century ‘city wall’ that still circles part of the town.
The European money has been matched by funds from High Street Innovation Funding, Bolsover District Council and Old Bolsover Town Council, and will be spent this year on making Castle Street and the ‘Cenotaph’ area more attractive to tourists and locals, boosting trade.
New signage for the town plus a programme of family events are also planned.
Dennis Skinner, MP for Bolsover, said: “It’s fantastic to see Bolsover being given investment that will really show off the best of what our town has to offer. The castle brings in thousands of visitors every year, and it’s great to see residents and traders being given a chance to make the most of it.”
Bolsover District Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Councillor Alan Tomlinson, said: “This will bring our rich local story to life and show off Bolsover to the 21st century visitor who enjoys history.”
