A new scheme has been launched aimed at boosting health and fitness among Barnsley’s workforce.

Barnsley-based not-for-profit organisation Team Activ has pioneered a new scheme designed to boost the health and wellbeing of staff at town businesses.

The Trek Activ 2016 programme, which is funded by the department for transport’s Sustainable Travel Fund, aims to boost workers’ health, workplace productivity and cut carbon emissions.

It will include bespoke training sessions for participating businesses covering route planning, leading walks, health and safety and providing example walks in the area.

Team Activ will also provide an online registration, which will monitor each participant’s activity levels and create an online community of Barnsley walkers.

There will also be Trek Activ Tips: an online toolkit to help businesses to engage their team.

The Walk 1000 Miles Challenge, as part of the programme, will encourage businesses to compete by logging miles they have covered over the programme.

Darren Padgett, director of Team Activ, said: “Sitting at a desk all day is hugely detrimental to health, so the more activity employees can do the better.

“We want to inspire workplaces in Barnsley to make small healthy changes, such as walking to work. Besides the obvious health benefits, getting active has proved to increase productivity and slash employee absences due to long term illness.”
