Barnsley has the highest overall employment rate in South Yorkshire, according to its council.
A report covering the third quarter reveals a Cities Outlook Report identified Barnsley as the best performing for private sector employment growth out of 63 towns and cities. The town tops the table with 9.4 per cent growth and ranks ninth for growth in private sector jobs over the last 10 years.
The report also reveals the number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance has fallen for the third consecutive quarter, with only 2.5 per cent of adult working age population claiming JSA, compared to 2.7 per cent regionally.
The council says other key achievements so far this year include 985 new jobs. 707 businesses supported to expand and the inward investment target of £52.5m exceeded by £0.5m.
Coun Alan Gardiner said: “The increase is thanks to a substantial rise in new start-ups, self-employment and private sector employment. “This reflects the support provided by Enterprising Barnsley.”
