The rail industry has created hundreds of jobs in Doncaster over the last six months, figures show - as the town campaigns for an HS2 Rail College.
Meanwhile, Doncaster’s rail and engineering companies have won in excess of £1.7bn of orders over the next five years, it is claimed.
Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “This is a very exciting time to work in the rail industry with lots of investment in our railway networks and the prospect of an HS2 Rail College being located here.
“Doncaster has a long heritage in the railway industry and this investment will bring much-needed jobs to the town.”
Doncaster is seen as a key rail cluster in the UK, she added. It is home to railway engineering companies including Wabtec Rail Ltd, VolkerRail Group, DB Schenker, Unipart Rail and Trackwork, with many others also based in the town.
Wabtec Rail has just recruited its 1,000th employee and is investing. Unipart Rail, based in Hexthorpe, has secured orders and also recruited, taking staff numbers to 400.
