Rotherham seal manufacturer AES Engineering dominates the table of the town’s most profitable manufacturing companies yet again.

Chris Rea’s company made an impressive £18.3m last year, a slight rise on the £17.8m in the year previous.

Now, as then, it was more than enough to keep the company far in front in terms of profit in Rotherham.

The main table shows it was in 13th place overall, had a £146.5m turnover and employs 1,668 people, at more than 70 sites in 38 countries.

AES makes mechanical seals under the AESSEAL brand and is based at Bradmarsh Business Park.

It has grown from employing five in an ageing shop in Attercliffe 35 years ago to become one of the top four mechanical seal manufacturers in the world.

It has won 12 Queen’s Awards for Enterprise and an OBE and Cutlers’ Company gold medal for Chris Rea.

Second-placed AMG Superalloys – formerly London and Scandinavian Metallurgical Company – made £6m profit.

Kostal UK made £3.5m on £65m turn over and employs 492.

The firm manufactures automotive switches for premium vehicles such as Jaguar Land Rover, Porsche, Bentley and Audi.

Kostal UK is based at Goldthorpe Industrial Estate, Commercial Road, Goldthorpe, and is a subsidiary of German manufacturer Kostal.
