Bridge to be built connecting Sheffield city centre to nature trail

The local authority will contribute £212,500. The project will have a £220,000 budget funded by Section 106 money which include £7,500 of council fees.

The decision was approved by leading councillors at a cabinet meeting this week.

Councillor Mark Jones, cabinet member for environment, said: “I’m particularly pleased to see the work going on at Little Kelham to get the cycle paths working, anything we can do to encourage people to use active transport is always welcome, certainly as we look to address climate change.”

The Upper Don Walk Trust has also contributed £20,000 and together, the money will be used to connect Kelham Island to the Upper Don Trail, a 17 km riverside walking and cycling route connecting the city centre to the Peak District.

Council officers said it will form a “key missing link” in both the proposed low traffic neighbourhood and the Upper Don Trail.

The project involves creating a simple, new pedestrian and cycleway bridge over the goyt between the Kelham Island Museum and the Little Kelham housing development on Green Lane.

It will be constructed by the developers of the Little Kelham site, CITU, who will also be responsible for the maintenance of the bridge.

The trail as a whole aims to connect thousands of homes to a green active travel network and Outdoor City activities and the Trust said it has the potential to be the “envy of the UK”.
