Lamb doesn’t come much greener than this… Chef Dan Smith and butcher Nick Coates called in at neighbouring Haddon Farm last week to choose the lamb for the latest menu at the Peacock in Rowsley.

“By feeling the back and rump you can gauge the amount of meat,” says Dan. “The lamb is just fed on the grass from the fields, and is completely organic.

“I’ll use what I can and the rest will be sold at Coates’ shop in Darley Dale.”

Sheffield has failed to make headway in its quest for gastronomic recognition, with a disappointing two entries in the 2016 Good Food Guide, out this week.

Rafters once again flew the flag with an impressive 3 for Tom Lawson’s cooking, while Lokanta was recommended as a ‘local gem.’

It was left to neighbouring Derbyshire to shine: Fischer’s Baslow Hall is among the top 50 in the UK. Others include: Old Vicarage at Ridgeway, Bradwell’s Samuel Fox, Rowley’s in Baslow and Red Lion at Stonedge.
