The Coral are back with album, tour and Sheffield show

After a five-year hiatus, Liverpudlian rockers The Coral are back with a new album and UK tour – including a date in Sheffield.

Distance Inbetween, the band’s eighth studio long-player and first album of new material since 2010’s Butterfly House, will be released on Friday, March 4, the day the band launch their UK and European tour.

Frontman James Skelly says: ““Before we started making the album, we had discussed we wanted it to be more minimal and rhythmical.

“We thought ‘if you’ve got a rhythm section that’s been playing together for almost 20 years, why not make that the centre of the songs’.”

The band first shot to fame in 2002, as their eponymous debut album reached number five and spawned hit singles Goodbye and Dreaming of You.

Oen year later and their second album, Magic and Medicine – featuring top 10 hits Don’t Think You’re the First and Pass it On – shot to number one,

The band have gone on to sell more than a million albums, with Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker, The Invisible Invation and Roots & Echoes all reaching the top 10.

On Distance Inbetween, James is joined by younger brother Ian, on drums, keyboard player Nick Power and bassist Paul Duffy, as well as the newest member of the band guitarist Paul Molloy, formerly of The Zutons, following the departures of guitarists Bill Ryder-Jones, in 2008 and, more recently, Lee Southall.

James says: “Paul was playing with Ian in their band, Serpent Power, and we’d all been mates with him for years.

“We already had a couple of tunes recorded and Ian suggested Paul add some guitar.

“His parts really enhanced the tracks; he understood where he needed to leave space. From that point we didn’t look back.

“We had a full line-up and were confident we could make an album that would stand next to the others.”
