Nature reserve springs into action with special events

It is the time of year when species of birds are busy preparing to raise a family, building nests before the hungry chicks will need feeding, and there are plenty of different varieties to see including avocets and warblers.

Mike Andrews, Blacktoft’s visitor officer, said: “From the moment you leave the car and wander onto the reserve you get caught up in the action.

“All around you, the birds are chirping in the bushes and if you look to the sky, you are likely to see marsh harriers floating past.

“The reserve comes alive during spring so come, relax and experience nature at its best.”

He advised making the most of a spring visit to Blacktoft Sands, by popping into reception between the hours of 9am and 5pm, where the experienced volunteers will explain where to go and what to see.

Children can also complete a spring wildlife challenge and claim a free prize.

Then, visitors can wander about the reserve, looking out for Blacktoft’s helpful wildlife tips and pointers to make sure they don’t miss out on any of the action.

Special events will also be held on Saturday, April 26, from 10am to noon, and from 7pm to 9pm, where visitors can join wildlife guides to experience the sights and sounds at Blacktoft Sands.

These events cost £5 for adults and £2.50 for children.

The reserve is situated between Ousefleet and Adlingfleet near Goole, just follow the brown tourist signs from Keadby Bridge.
