Lady Val set to sing Billie’s Blues

The centenary of the birth of one of the world’s most famous jazz singers will be celebrated with a special show in Doncaster.

Lady Sings the Blues celebrates the music of Billie Holliday and features Val Wiseman, a former winner of the British jazz award for best vocalist.

Billie, who was born in 1915, enjoyed more than 30 top-20 hits in the the USA, including Summertime and The Way You Look Tonight,

A concert spokesman said: “Val and the band travel back to where it all began in 1933 in New York for a musical journey through to Billie’s untimely death in 1959, including many of her hits.

“Paying tribute to one of the biggest icons of the 20th century, the evening ventures through the 30s, 40s and 50s featuring original arrangements performed with style and vitality.”

Alongside Val are six musicians – bandleader and trumpet player Digby Fairweather, Alan Barnes on saxophone and clarinet, trombone player Roy Williams, pianist Brian Dee, Len Skeat on double bass and drummer Bobby Worth – who have amassed more than 35 British jazz awards between them.
