Love, marriage, modern relationships and some of Broadway’s greatest songs…welcome to the world of Stephen Sondheim’s Company!

Handsworth and Hallam Theatre Company take on the challenge of the iconic Tony Award-winning show about contemporary life in a new production which runs at Sheffield University Drama Studio from June 17 to 20.

The acclaimed South Yorkshire team whose recently hits have included Soho Cinders and Urinetown had originally planned to stage a revival of another hit musical, Titanic, but that had to be put on hold for reasons beyond the company’s control.

But that means the slot will now be filled by Stephen Sondheim’s acclaimed study of middle aged Bobby and his interactions with girlfriends and married friends, observing the joys, compromises and neuroses that come with commitment, all set against a background of comfortable modern Manhattan.

The show first opened on Broadway in 1970 to critical acclaim and went on to win six Tony Awards, reinforcing Sondheim’s reputation as the musical world’s leading composer.

Among a string of memorable songs are the comic masterpiece Getting Married Today and the unforgettable Ladies Who Lunch, an enduring ironic anthem to wealthy women of a certain age and their empty social rituals.

“Company is an extraordinary Broadway and West End giant that hasn’t been seen in Sheffield since 2012 when the Crucible presented a production starring Francesca Annis and Daniel Evans,” said Handsworth and Hallam director Matthew Walker.

“We were extremely disappointed that we have had to put our plans for Titanic on hold for a few months but we think we have come up with a brilliant alternative and one that will strike a chord with our audience.

“Company is an unforgettable piece of theatre and we have a great team of actors ready to bring the story of Bobby and his friends to life.

“It’s an intimate story and one that we know will suit the University Drama Studio perfectly and although it is now more than 50 years old, it remains as relevant today as it ever was.”

Tickets for Company cost £20.50 each and are available now at www.hhtcsheffield.com/events/titanic-the-musical-2026-06-17-19-15
