The movie, inspired by the true story of Jamie Campbell, who boldly dressed in drag for his school prom despite being warned not to by teachers, was filmed in the city with The Moor and Parson Cross estate among the locations to be featured.
The musical has now been shortlisted in the Best British Film category by BAFTA. The winners will be revealed on 13 March.
To honour the movie, those who inspired it and starred in it, here we are taking a look back at scenes that were shot in the Steel City.
