Step back in time this festive season and discover the magic of Hardwick Wintertide at Hardwick Hall in Chesterfield. From now until January 4, visitors are invited to embark on The Tale of Misrule and the Holly King, a story steeped in old English folklore and brought to life through enchanting displays across the 16th-century mansion and gardens.

This playful tale of rivalry turned friendship is the perfect way to warm the heart this Christmas.

To make the experience even more atmospheric, explore Hardwick by lantern light during the late-night open evenings. With free-flow entry, it offers a unique chance to see the hall in a whole new light on Fridays and Saturdays from November 28 until Christmas Day.

Hardwick Wintertide is an annual celebration of Elizabethan traditions, and this year’s event is more captivating than ever. Working closely with local artists, the Hardwick team have created a festive story woven through handmade decorations, reflective poems, and interactive installations. Each detail has been lovingly crafted and decorated by a dedicated team of volunteers to ensure an unforgettable experience.

Elle Maxwell-Wood, senior programming and partnerships officer at Hardwick, explains:

‘This is the third year of Hardwick Wintertide, rooted in a story about Elizabethan festive traditions. The team has created a playful trail of installations through the stableyard, gardens and hall, which invites visitors to view and interact with Hardwick during a Tudor Christmas, as seen through the eyes of The Lord of Misrule, The Holly King and Old Mother Mal. Through inspired decorations, reflective poems, and moments to engage with different spaces, Hardwick Wintertide is a chance for all the family to step back in time and return to a childlike curiosity and enjoy the spirit of Christmas together.’

For those who want to take the story home, The Tale of Misrule and the Holly King booklet is available for a suggested donation of £3 to help more projects and events like this happen at Hardwick.
