Doncaster 'born' kids' TV favourite Worzel Gummidge set to return to BBC

Children's television favourite Worzel Gummidge - the lovable scarecrow who was 'born' in Doncaster - is set to return to our screens.

Actor Mackenzie Crook is working with the BBC for a reboot of the classic 70s and 80s show which originally starred Jon Pertwee.

The show was based on the books by Arksey-born author Barbara Euphan Todd and featured the scrapes and adventures of a comical scarecrow with interchangeable heads.

The Bafta-winning actor, 46, who starred alongside Ricky Gervais in The Office has written a script and the show could be on screens as early as next year.

Barbara Euphan Todd, who created the character, was born in Arksey in January 1890, the only child of Anglican vicar Thomas Todd and Alice Maud Mary.

She later moved to Surrey and during her career, she penned ten Worzel Gummidge books, the first being released in 1936 with the last in 1963.

She died in 1976 at the age of 86.
