New book launched as part of Hillsborough History Project: 'Memories of Hillsborough 1930 to 1960'
and on Freeview 262 or Freely 565
The title was officially unveiled by Sheffield Lord Mayor, Councillor Jayne Dunn, at a special event held at the National Emergency Services Museum this weekend.
The book is a carefully curated collection of memories from Hillsborough residents, capturing the everyday life, challenges, and triumphs of the community during the mid-20th century. It brings to life personal stories from those who lived through significant historical moments, from the interwar years to the post-World War II era, and aims to preserve these important first-hand accounts for future generations.

This second book forms part of the two-year initiative to research and develop the rich social history of Hillsborough and Owlerton, inspired by the discovery of rare cinefilms from the 1930s and 1940s.
The films, alongside oral histories and additional research, provided the foundation for the group’s work in preserving the local heritage.
Jenny Morton, chair of the Hillsborough and Owlerton Local History Group, said:

This collection of memories helps us understand and appreciate the lives of Hillsborough’s residents, and we’re excited to share these stories with a wider audience.”
The project has involved volunteers, local schools, and community groups, all working together to ensure that the legacy of Hillsborough’s social heritage endures. With the help of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, this project aims to leave a lasting impact through its books, exhibitions, and educational resources.
The launch event was attended by local historians, community members, and contributors to the book, marking another significant milestone in the group’s efforts to bring Hillsborough’s past to life.
