Sheffield artist Will Rea was commissioned to create the public artwork, which stands at three-storeys high in the shopping centre, and which had remained closed to the public until last week.

And now its creation has been celebrated in a one-minute ‘behind the scenes’ video, created by filmmaker Andrew Bainbridge.

Nicola Blake, who commissioned the artist for the property owner, LAP, said: “It was a long time in the making and just as Will put down his paintbrush we headed into national lockdown.

“However, now the square has reopened, and we can allow the public to see the art mural finished and do what it was designed to do – be enjoyed by the people of Sheffield.”

Will Rea, who lives near Ecclesall Road, is a freelance illustrator and has previously created artwork for places such as the Showroom cinema on Paternoster Row, and Bungalows and Bears on Division Street.

After answering an open call to Sheffield-based artists, the 22-year-old Sheffield Hallam University graduate won the opportunity to create the Orchard Square artwork.

Nicola added: “The work was inspired by the artist’s interpretation of the city and what emotions it evoked in him.

“In his video, filmmaker Andrew Bainbridge captures the magnitude of the task, the challenges, and ultimately the impact of the finished work.

“We hope people will come see Will’s creations, and his take on our much-loved city in the sunshine at Orchard Square.”
