The decade that gave us all this and more is being celebrated with a brand new and free interactive ‘walk-around’ virtual tour exhibition, called I Grew Up In The 80s, writes Graham Walker.

It features more than 200 iconic objects and was due to physically open until March in the temporary space at Experience Barnsley Museum and Discovery Centre, inside the Town Hall.

LIVE TOUR: Curator Matt Fox will take visitors on a Facebook live stream Q&A guided tour on Tuesday, November 24, at 7pm – CLICK HERE.

FREE ACTIVITY e-MAG: Alongside the exhibition there is a fun activity booklet packed with 80’s activities which has been turned into a page-turning e-Mag which can also be downloaded digitally – CLICK HERE.

Experience Barnsley is currently closed due to Covid-19 restrictions and that meant nobody could see the latest installed exhibition. Until now.

Barnsley Museums has opened the doors digitally so visitors, from the comfort of their own homes, can now travel back in time to explore the decade which also introduced us to the world wide web, computer games and MTV.

Information hotspots include jukebox and video walls of album covers and movie posters – click on the links to play some of the decade’s most memorable music videos and film trailers.

Other educational and entertaining hotspots reveal the stories behind objects which defined the 80s from shell suits and leg warmers to the Casio KX-101 ‘King of the Boombox’, Adidas Hi Tops basketball shoes and Masters Of The Universe and Transformer toys.

An accompanying activity booklet, with fun things to do like touring yourself into a Transformer using cardboard boxes and how to baking a giant Lion Bar, will be available from the museum gift shop when it reopens but visitors can also read this now in the form of a free page-turning e-Mag, with an introducing video on page one from curator Matt – CLICK HERE.

Coun Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture) said: “Barnsley Museums’ always strive to be as accessible as possible. They want to share their collections and exhibitions with people even though they are closed and this 360 tour is the perfect way to do it.
