The sketch, which depicts a key worker theme, was created in 26 minutes as part of the national 2.6 challenge to support charities like Weston Park Cancer Charity, whose fundraising has been hit by the pandemic, despite its services being needed more now than ever.

The unique sketch will be auctioned online.

Joe, who is aged in his 80s, said: “I’ve wanted to create something new for a while, so when the opportunity to collaborate with Weston Park Cancer Charity came along, in Weston Park Hospital’s 50th anniversary year, it seemed like the perfect fit.

“It is so important to keep spirits high during these uncertain times and celebrate the health services which so many people are relying on - hopefully, it might even help brighten someone’s day too.”

Samantha Dixon, charity chief executive officer, said: “This year, we were due to celebrate 50 years of Weston Park Hospital, but sadly many of our anniversary fundraising activities, including our gala ball, have been cancelled.

“We are extremely thankful to Joe for gifting his time and skills to create a unique piece of artwork which will celebrate everything our healthcare heroes are doing to care for vulnerable people affected by cancer.”

The charity has already provided hundreds of clients with support – either over the phone, via video call or by other virtual means – since closing the doors to its support centre, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, it is supporting more people in greater distress than ever, as people affected by cancer are experiencing high levels of worry, anxiety and loneliness.

Samantha said: “With one in two people affected by cancer, the demand on our services is already growing but the current Covid-19 outbreak is creating additional challenges for anyone living with and beyond cancer.

“It’s why Weston Park Cancer Charity promises to be there for cancer patients and their families, together at every step for cancer patients and their families.”
