Armed man spotted in Sheffield street with knife while shouting at people spared from jail

Sheffield Crown Court heard on February 4 how Brian Anthony Thomas, aged 58, of Foster Way, High Green, Sheffield, was seen by police in the street with a knife on Foster Way.
Brian Outhwaite, prosecuting, said: “Police were called by a member of the public who told them about a man in possession of a knife.”

Hide AdTwo officers arrived and saw the defendant with a knife in his hand, according to Mr Outhwaite, and he was told to drop it which he did.
Police made enquiries and it was made known to them that Thomas had been in a car park with the knife shouting at people to leave and one witness said they had seen him hacking at a tree with the knife.
Thomas, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to affray and to possessing a bladed article in a public place after the incident on June 20, 2020.
Francis Edusei, defending, who indicated Thomas has mental health issues, told the court: “Mercifully, it was a brief incident. When asked to drop the knife by police he did.

Judge David Dixon who recognised Thomas has made progress since the offence sentenced him to six-months of custody suspended for 18 months with a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.
