The Australian international, an ever-present for QPR before signing for Wednesday last summer, has hit a fresh worry to continue a horror battle with injuries that has stretched back to the first months of his arrival at Hillsborough.

Luongo has been one of the club’s best performers when he has been available, but his latest issue will see him rejoin the Owls’ relegation battle at for the run-in at the earliest.

“Massimo came back from his thigh injury, he started running and his knee flared up,” Thompson said. “He’s been for a scan, he’s been to see a surgeon and he’s looking at four, five or six weeks.

“It’s a massive blow. We are really disappointed. It is what it is. Injuries are part and parcel of what we do.”

Wednesday fell to three sloppy goals well taken by Bryan Mbuemo, Saman Ghoddos and Bech Sørensen on an evening that saw them fail to create a clear opportunity to score.

The Owls have now lost their last three matches on the spin on a run of three defeats in four. And though there are 15 matches remaining and only three points to make up on the safety zone, with out-of-form Luton and Rotherham to come in the next two rounds of matches a turnaround in form is needed if they are to restart a survival push.

Thompson passionately defended his side’s performance. He said: “It doesn’t matter how you play at this stage of the season, with the position we’re in, we have to win games. And we’re not doing that.

“They’re a good team and when you start pushing and pressing they can open you up, as a lot of teams have found in this division.

“We’ve got to be more ruthless at both ends of the pitch. No matter what goes on in the middle of the pitch, and I felt we were better than on Saturday, it’s there that it matters.”

Number one goalkeeper Keiren Westwood also missed the clash with a rib injury.
