A word from the Chairman - it might help… - Joe Crann's column as Sheffield Wednesday's woes worsen

Before I start, let me make it clear that this isn’t me begging for an exclusive, or pleading with the chairman to speak to The Star. I just think the fanbase could do with hearing from him.

It’s certainly worth noting that Chansiri has availed himself a couple of times in the last few months, speaking at great length to us about his continued involvement in Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.

But things have changed since the last time.

Defeat to Luton Town would’ve been a blow anyway, but the nature of it was what hit so many supporters. Myself included. The first half showed what they’re capable of, how they can play. But sadly, so did the second. It was both ends of the spectrum.

After the loss, the inevitable social media meltdown ensued. And it’s no surprise given the fact that Wednesday now find themselves six points adrift in the relegation zone and back into a rut of form that will take them down if it continues.

And will a word from the chairman change that form? Nope. Would it be welcomed with open arms by the fans? Probably not. But for me, a bit of clarity could go a long way.

Is Neil Thompson now the Sheffield Wednesday manager? If not, why has it taken so long to find Tony Pulis’ replacement? What – if anything – went wrong in the January transfer window? Is there a contingency plan if the worst happens and Wednesday go down? Would that change his plans for the future?

As I said before, I’m not asking for an exclusive. But a statement on the club’s website wouldn’t go amiss as Wednesday head towards the business end of one of the most important seasons in their recent history.

No doubt that any answers he did give would be used against him by some, I think that goes without saying. But for most, some reassurance about the future of the club and the way in which it’s heading, could reduce the levels of fear that grow with each passing defeat.

We all turn into experts online. We’re all physios, accountants and football club owners, when most of us haven’t got a hint of experience in any of those businesses, but Sheffield Wednesday fans are worried. And I think anything that might help allay those worries – even if it’s short-term or on a small scale – would be welcomed by most.

This year has been grim, for everybody. And millionaires and football clubs are far from exempt from the damage that’s been caused. Even Chansiri’s harshest critics would surely be able to understand the damage that the pandemic has done.

And if Dejphon Chansiri walked away from Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow, they’d be in big trouble. I just think it might be handy to know where things stand going into the 14 cup finals that lay ahead.

After all, we’re all Wednesday, aren’t we?
