Popular Sheffield Wednesday man happy to be ridded of contract uncertainty

A long-term contract at Sheffield Wednesday has provided Di’Shon Bernard with an environment to keep getting better and better.

That’s according to the man himself, who in the summer penned a deal that could stand to take him to 2027 at the Hillsborough club having only signed a one-year deal ahead of his initial Hillsborough campaign last time out.

The former Manchester United defender has been a key figure in these early stages of Wednesday’s season, playing every league game but for a one-match suspension handed out for his red card at Luton Town. In his two previous years, Bernard has gone into the turn of the season unsure where his future will take him. Tied down to a three-year stint, the 24-year-old is keen to push on.

“It makes me more relaxed and able to focus on the football,” he said. “The last two years now I’ve been going into a summer where you’re a bit unsure, you’re messaging your agent every day asking ‘What’s happening? Any news?’ That can be hard at times, being stuck at home not being able to do what you want to do.

“I’m happy now being settled and being able to concentrate on my football, on the season at hand and trying to better myself. I want to get better and better.”

Some 53 appearances into his Wednesday career, Bernard is a player who has struck up a fond reputation among the club’s fan base. His hand-waving chant is never far from an away day sing-song and he believes supporters have a monumental role to play as they look to make strides this season.

“There’s a togetherness in our changing room, but also with the fans as well,” he said. “It makes it 10 times better, they’re such a big driving factor in how the season goes I think, especially at home. Their voices can be the driving factor in whether we get the three points or not and we need that 12th man in the season. It’s so good hearing them chant our name and getting behind us, it can only fill all of us with confidence.”
