Swimmer Chloe, 12, is full of promise

A YOUNG Sheffield swimmer who removed her armbands less than two years ago has won an award after quickly becoming a gala medallist.
The npower Federation of Disability Sports Awards 2008 held a ceremony at Leeds United Football Club in recognition of some of Yorkshire's finest disabled athletes - and Sheffield athletes took home two awards.

Chloë Selman, aged 12, who won the Most Promising Female Junior Newcomer of the Year award, was still wearing armbands in July 2006 when she first took to the water but quickly entered her first swimming gala and won silver and a bronze medals.

By October that year, she was swimming for the Yorkshire team at the DSE National Championships and in December she received a letter from Mencap inviting her to join the national squad as an elite swimmer.

Kevin Rodgers, community involvement executive for npower, said: "Chloë's progress is striking because of how quickly she has developed her talent and skill."

Sheffield FC's cerebral palsy team who took home the prestigious Regan Cooper Senior Team of the Year trophy.

The new team made its mark in just one season by winning the League One Division of the Yorkshire Ability Counts league.

Now two of the team's players, coached by Sheffield FC disability community development officer Eddie Edwards, have progressed to play for the England cerebral palsy national side.
