CREATIVE South Yorkshire kids have their work cut out – building an Olympic village using only cardboard, sticky tape and cotton wool!
Around 800 children from across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire are this week taking part in this year's Build It event at Sheffield's Kelham Island Museum.
They are all asked to build an Olympic village using just cardboard, sticky tape and cotton wool to house athletes from all around the world for the London Olympics in 2012.
Teams of pupils aged five to 11 from more than 90 primary schools have just three hours to create their multi-cultural villages complete with sports stadium, gym, swimming pool, transport interchange, place of worship, bank, public house, cinema, post office, information kiosk and booking stands.
Teachers, parents and industry experts are on hand to help.
Y6 teacher Paul Mangham from Keresforth Primary, one of the schools which have taken part, said: "Build It is a fabulous day as it gives pupils the chance to work as a team outside of school and enables them to use their own initiative and develop important teamwork and problem-solving skills."
Mary Milburn, from Business and Education South Yorkshire, said: "The event helps encourage teamwork and communication between pupils but also gives them a chance to work alongside experts within the construction sector."
