MORE children in Sheffield say they do not like reading than anywhere else in the UK, according to research.
A report conducted on behalf of Booktime and Booked Up claims 16 per cent of children in Sheffield and Manchester say they do not like reading – the highest in the UK.
And fewer parents now read to their children every day compared to two years ago.
Figures show only one in three parents or carers read aloud to children on a daily basis compared to nearly half – 43 per cent – in 2006.
Figures were compiled by asking 1,507 UK parents or carers of pre-school and school age children about their offspring's reading habits, and 1,051 children aged seven to 14 were also surveyed.
Younger children are more likely to read with parents, the research shows. Half of children aged four to five read with an adult daily compared to only seven per cent of children aged 11 to 12.
