THIS group of intrepid scouts set themselves a challenge of running, rowing and cycling the distance from Sheffield to Switzerland in the comfort of a city gym - before they go there for real on an adventure holiday.
The Ecclesall Adventure Scouts ran the distance from Sheffield to Dover, rowed the width of the Channel between Dover and Calais, and cycled the remainder of the journey between Calais and Switzerland.

In total that's more than 1,000km!

Luckily they carried out the challenge in a relay, sharing the distance out between them throughout an eight-hour stint at the Virgin Active gym in Broadfield Road.

They're aiming to raise £2,000 to pay for various equipment they will need for a two-week adventure holiday in Kandersteg in the Swiss Alps this summer.

And when one of the items on the list is a batch of tents for the group of 18 to sleep in, it's pretty important that people dig deep and help them out.!

Tony Richardson, one of the scout leaders, said: "We'll be going up mountains, having a go at white-water rafting, canoeing and rock climbing. All the kind of stuff you'd expect to do up in the Alps.

"But we need some equipment - tents, cooking tools, stuff to help us up the hills, rucksacks and compasses.

"We've got loads of other stuff going on as well as this - supermarket bag packing, car boot sales - and we'd really like to raise £2,000, but at the bottom end we definitely need £600 to pay for the tents."

The group will also be able to keep the equipment after their Swiss holiday and use it to get out and about more on weekend trips and other holidays abroad - living up to their reputation as the most adventurous scouts in the pack.

Tony said the value of trips like these was 'immeasurable.'

"I have been doing these for years and, especially for the younger ones, it's a brilliant experience," he said.

"They might not have been abroad before, or at least not without their parents.

"It teaches them how to look after themselves, and work and live together in a team, and builds self-confidence."
