The David Hare Season at Sheffield Theatres

Have your say

Sheffield Theatres embarks on a major retrospective of David Hare’s work, one of the most influential and prolific playwrights of post-war Britain.

Sheffield Theatres is proud to present three of his finest plays Racing Demon, Plenty and The Breath of Life – each written twelve years apart – across all three theatres, alongside a series of play readings, workshops, talks and interviews.

David Hare’s plays are performed all over the world. With an unerring instinct to analyse the times in which we live, Hare’s powerful body of work effortlessly combines the personal and the political. A screenwriter, a director and performer himself, many of Hare’s plays premièred at the National Theatre.

This major retrospective of the works of David Hare is a hugely ambitious undertaking. Racing Demon will be directed by Sheffield Theatres’ Artistic Director Daniel Evans and staged in the Crucible Theatre; Thea Sharrock will direct Plenty in the Studio Theatre and Peter Gill will direct The Breath of Life in the Lyceum Theatre.

David Hare said, “For the whole of my theatre-going life, Sheffield has been one of the most vibrant and exciting theatre cities in the country. When I ran touring companies, it was high among the gigs you most relished. I can’t think of a greater honour for a living playwright than to have three plays simultaneously performed in its three different theatres.”

Sheffield Theatres Artistic Director Daniel Evans said ‘David Hare is one of the most significant figures of post-war British drama and I’m delighted that for the first time ever at Sheffield Theatres, we will celebrate the work of one writer on all three of our stages simultaneously. To have Thea Sharrock and Peter Gill direct two of the plays in the Hare Season is a great honour, and I’m thrilled to welcome some of the country’s finest actors and designers to Sheffield for these plays.’

David Hare is a playwright and screenwriter.
