This tense thriller by Canadian playwright Peter Colley follows Jan, who has recently suffered a nervous breakdown, and her husband Greg, an archaeologist, who have rented an old farmhouse in the country where she can recover her strength.

George the local farmer is also their landlord and he tells stories of a terrible murder that took place in the house, and of a ghost that reputedly stalks in the night.

Jan’s imagination gets fired up and the situation worsens when Greg’s sister Laura arrives to stay.

Jan soon finds herself tormented by strange sounds in the night and by visions of the vengeful ghost.

Is she having another breakdown? Is someone trying to drive her mad? Events take an unexpected turn just to add to the suspense.

City Players was founded in 1954 by Brian Errat, Pat Kay, Mary Naylor, Peter Thompson and the current chairman, Nick DiNitto.

They rehearsed in various cellars and stables until about 1980, when they moved to the then unused building they still call home.

At first it was just used as a base for rehearsals and set building, and plays were presented at the Library Theatre.

Eventually, it proved far more sensible to rent the building, and so The Corner Playhouse was born. It is now a fully operational theatre, not just a converted village hall.

City Players meet every Tuesday and Friday between 7.30 and 10pm at the theatre. New members are welcome in any capacity, not just acting. Call 01246 430507.

The show runs from tonight to October 24. Box office: call 01246 430507 or go to www.cityplayers.co.uk
