Every dog has its day – and stardom is beckoning for four South Yorkshire pooches.
STOS Theatre Company will return to Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre this November with a lavish new production of hit stage show Legally Blonde: The Musical.
Anyone familiar with the 2001 movie comedy starring Reese Witherspoon will know that one of the show’s true stars is Bruiser Woods – Elle’s pet Chihuahua and constant companion.
To find the perfect Chihuahuas fit for the role, producers from the Sheffield-based theatre company held an open audition for the tiny dogs and their owners.
A handful of dogs took part in the event at the Doggy Den, on Little London Road, in Sheffield.
Producers were not only on the look out for the perfect pair of Chihuahuas to share Bruiser’s role, but also for two bulldogs to play Rufus, the dog at the centre of a lovers’ tiff and legal quarrel in the show.
Director Mark Feakins said: “We had 10 dogs audition – the youngest was 16 weeks and the oldest was four. They were all gorgeous and we were able to find four dogs who looked the part – we found four little stars. Bruiser will be played by Lola and Dora and Rufus will be played by Odin and Murphy.
“They start rehearsals in October for the show which runs at the Lyceum, where every trick in the book will be used to get their stage performances up to the level required – including treats tucked away in pockets and corners of costumes and even tuna brine smeared on an actress’ ear!”
n Legally Blonde: The Musical comes to the Lyceum Theatre November 17 to 21.
