THEATRE lovers in South Yorkshire are urged to back a national campaign to see more investment in theatres.
My Theatre Matters! gives audiences a chance to speak up for their theatres following government funding cuts.
The campaign website – www.mytheatrematters.com – allows audiences to pledge their support and download information about how to lobby politicians to convince them to continue funding theatres in their area, following a string of cuts – including a £200,000 cut to Sheffield Theatres’ subsidy from Sheffield Council.
Brian Attwood, of performing arts publication The Stage, said: “Many theatres are facing reductions, and in some cases complete cuts, in support from local authorities. It is the single biggest threat facing our industry.
“One need only look to see what has happened in Sheffield to see this is a national problem facing theatres up and down the country.
“We need to show theatres are public services valued by their audiences.”
