Roll up! Roll up! join Proteus Theatre Company as they bring their brand new circus-inspired family performance of Rapunzel to The Montgomery in Sheffield next week.
Based on the classic Grimm fairy tale of the princess with the long hair who is shut up in a tower, Proteus Theatre Company return to the city centre theatre with the mother of bad hair days.
Rapunzel, the star attraction of the Circus Persinette, performs her challenging trapeze acts three times a day to bring in the crowds. It’s all fun at the fair until Rapunzel falls in love.
When the possessive Ringmaster learns that his ‘little bird’ has feelings for new circus performer, Leo, he uses his strange magical powers to trap her in her gilded cage.
The other circus performers include a lion tamer with no lion, a strongman with no confidence and a medium with an out-of-control spirit guide.
Proteus Theatre Company’s cast of actors, clowns, aerial artists and puppets take you on a journey to experience a whole new look at Rapunzel’s story.
Like all The Montgomery’s professional theatre offerings, the idea of the show is to appeal to the whole family. It should be fun for anyone aged five or over.
This is a hair-raising, foot-tapping, high-flying ‘wash and blow dry’ of a show full of music, puppets, gravity-defying actors – and a lot of hair, of course.
Proteus Theatre Company are now an annual treat at The Monty, having brought the theatre’s very first professional touring show, Secret Garden, in 2012 and Alice in Wonderland in 2013.
Rapunzel will be performed at the theatre on Surrey Street next Wednesday, December 3, at 1pm and 7pm. Tickets cost £10, with family offers, and are available online at TheMontgomery.org.uk, by phone on 0114 249 6000, or in person at the Crucible box office.
Over at the Barnsley Civic, there’s another new take on a well-loved fairy tale coming up.
Theatre company Horse + Bamboo have what they promise is “a delectable version of Hansel + Gretel. A baked up delicious treat of a show for ages five and up, it is beautifully presented with succulent music, film, puppets and masks.
“Dark, chewy and yummy at heart, yet coated with a sprinkle of something light, sweet and zesty, Hansel + Gretel promises to be a feast for the senses.”
The show is on from Tuesday, December 9 to Sunday 14, with performances at 1pm and 6.30pm on Tuesday, 10am and 1pm Wednesday to Friday and 1pm and 3.30pm on Saturday and Sunday.
