ONE of the original women who sparked smash-hit show and film Calendar Girls made a star appearance at a production in Barnsley.

Beryl Bamforth – who was Miss January in the nude Women’s Institute calendar of 1999, which raised cash for Leukaemia Research and made headlines worldwide –visited The Academy Theatre in Birdwell to see Calendar Girls.

She met the cast, toured the venue and got a standing ovation from the audience.

Lee Semley, director and producer of the LS Theatre Productions show, said: “It was unbelievable a woman who has been on The Late Show with David Letterman asked to see our production.

“The night was magical. “She was really nice and had lots of funny stories to tell from the original show.”

Calendar Girls is at The Academy until tomorrow.
