Rocky Horror Show, Lyceum
This perennial favourite is looking as fresh as ever on its latest visit to Sheffield this week to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
Darling Buds of May and Heartbeat star Philip Franks as the Narrator promised “50 shades of strange” in this fabulously camp musical tribute to science fiction B films .
Oliver Thornton owns the lead role of ‘sweet transvestite’ Frank-N-Furter and manages to do the Tim Curry voice and make the part his own. He has fun playing up to audience members who shout out set responses to the action on stage.
Lots of the audience were dressed up in fishnets and basques, jumping up to do the Timewarp, which is all part of the fun of the night.
Rachel Grundy filled in brilliantly as innocent abroad Janet for Emmerdale star Roxanne Pallett. Dancing on Ice winner Sam Attwater, playing her fiance Brad, showed he has a great voice in a solo song. As a pair, they have good chemistry and comic timing.
The whole cast, including Kristian Lavercombe in show creator Richard O’Brien’s role of Riff Raff, do a great job and their energy sweeps the show along.
I’m sure we’ll be doing the Timewarp again soon but this production will be hard to beat.
