City Players present playwright Alan Ayckbourn’s comedy drama this week.

Brother and sister Martin and Hilda Massey have just moved to a new house on the Bluebell Hill development, hoping to enjoy a peaceful existence there.

The peace is soon shattered by a young trespasser in their garden.

When neighbours are invited round to discuss events, they agree to form a neighbourhood watch group to safeguard themselves from crime.

But when the Masseys’ beloved garden gnome Monty is thrown through their lounge window, matters quickly escalate.

More complications are added by Martin’s burgeoning romance with Amy, wife of Gareth, rather too soon after her affair with Luther, the husband of Magda…

What begins as a well-intentioned scheme for a safer community ends in violence and acrimony.

The play was premièred at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough in September 2011. It was the 75th full-length play written by Alan Ayckbourn
