Ellesmere Show Stoppers 2013, The Montgomery
This evening of much-loved musical theatre song and dance numbers comes from Sheffield group Ellesmere Operatic Society, who are celebrating their 65th anniversary this year.
Stephen Schwarz has written many well-known shows and there’s a taster of his work with numbers from the current hit show, Wicked, plus Pippin, Godspell, Children of Eden and Pocahontas.
Rogers and Hammerstein penned some of the best-known songs of all time. My Favourite Things, Some Enchanted Evening and There is Nothing like a Dame are just a few of the classics featured during the show.
Wonderful Town boasts a rich score by Leonard Bernstein, composer of West Side Story.
The company will perform a selection of numbers from this show, which was most recently seen on tour at the Lyceum, starring Connie Fisher of How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? fame.
There are also hits from recent shows. Sister Act developed from the hit film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Betty Blue Eyes ran successfully during 2012 and is set at the time of the Queen’s coronation, Ghost is wowing audiences on tour and in the West End, while Avenue Q pulls in full houses. Show Stoppers will be at the theatre on Surrey Street from Thursday to Saturday.
Evening performances start at 7.15pm and there are tickets left for the 2.15pm Saturday matinee.
