Older people in Sheffield have been invited to a variety of events in their community to combat loneliness.

Care company Home Instead Senior Care has compiled a ‘What’s on Where’ directory of things going on in the north of Sheffield such as lunch clubs, coffee mornings, groups and societies.

One such event is the Young at Heart keep-fit group at Parson Cross Community Development Forum, used by people in their eighties and older. Kathy Markwick, from Home Instead, said: “The forum is a hive of activity and it is fantastic what it does for the local community.

“Their lunch club has about 30 people attending each week, with a waiting list of a similar amount.

“We created the WoW directory as part of our quest to combat or reduce loneliness and social isolation.

“The directory will be available in all GP surgeries, dentists, community centres and given to many people - the aim is to let as many people as possible know what is going on.”
