Work on a £9.3 million replacement sports centre in Chesterfield will begin today.

A sod-cutting ceremony will mark the start of work at the Queen’s Park Sports Centre, on the site of Queen’s Park Annexe, off Boythorpe Road.

The centre, which is due to be finished in early 2016, will feature a gym, swimming pool, a learner pool, squash courts, a sports hall as well as a midwifery centre.

Funding has come from Sport England, Chesterfield College and Chesterfield Council.

The current Queen’s Park Sports Centre will remain open until work is completed. The bowls and tennis facilities are unaffected.
