YOUNG athletes from a Sheffield school held their own mini Olympic torch relay before classes.

The children, aged six and seven, who are all pupils at Abbey Lane School, Beauchief, celebrated the torch’s arrival in Sheffield this week by having their own event on the way to school.

Organised by parents and starting on Abbey Lane at 7.30am, 15 children took part. They ran from house to house at a speedy pace set by ‘security dads’ Jim MacKenzie and Neil Bentley.

An hour after the start they arrived at the school to flag-waving parents and children.

Tom Bentley, aged seven, handed the torch over to the torch ambassadors - school caretakers Michelle Naylor and Julie Hinksman.

It was then paraded through the school to the Year 2 classrooms.

The children who took part were: Tyra  Hampsey, Rhiannon Moss, Esther Zawadzka, Jude Malinowski , Ruby MacKenzie, Elijah Hibberd, Imogen Statham, Finn Stevens, Daniel Morley, Beatrice Maher, Joe Johnson, Hannah Aulton, Joe Costello, Josiah Holden and Tom Bentley.

Tom’s mum Philippa said: “It was great fun. The children really enjoyed it all.”
