A BARNSLEY production team are bringing a popular Yorkshire play back to the region.
‘Bouncers’ will open at The Academy Theatre in Birdwell on Wednesday April 11, after just three short weeks of rehearsal.
Director Lee Semley of LS Theatre Productions, said: “It’s certainly our tightest schedule and toughest production yet, but after the success of Kes, I felt it was time for another challenge.”
‘Bouncers’ is Yorkshire playwright John Godber’s most popular play, set in and around a northern nightclub. The action focuses on the exploits of four doormen and their customers. The play creates a vivid picture of the relentless hedonism of northern nightlife, with its raw energy, flashing disco lights, and raucous lads and lasses out on the town.
“The play is as fresh today as it was when it was first performed in 1977,” said Lee.
“It’s also as relevant to today’s society, especially with the binge-drinking culture.”
The production stars four local Barnsley actors who, over the course of a two-hour period, will bring to life around 40 different characters from flirty drunken ladies to burly brutish rugby players.
“It’s certainly been a challenge getting these lads to dance and recreate iconic routines, such as Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller,” said Lee.
“Audiences are in for a raucous night of entertainment that will have them rolling in the aisles with laughter. If you’re a fan of shows like ITV1’s Benidorm, you’ll love this!”
