INTERNATIONAL showjumping is coming to South Yorkshire and organisers have added some extra punch with a knockout competition to promote its ambassador - Sheffield boxing icon Johnny Nelson.

The 44-year-old former WBO cruiserweight World Champion and now Sky TV boxing pundit is also a keen horseman.

So he jumped at the chance to be unveiled this week as the ambassador for the three-day Yorkshire International Showjumping Event at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena, over the Easter weekend of April 22 to 24.

And to celebrate The Star is giving readers the chance to win family tickets to experience the amazing spectacle, which aims to attract 21,000 people.

Top riders will be on show from the UK around the world - many of them going for gold at next year’s 2012 London Olympics.

Supported by governing body British Showjumping and Welcome to Yorkshire, the official tourism agency for Yorkshire, it is a competition with £150,000 of prize money, featuring amateur to top International classes, Puissance and Grand Prix.

Equestrian entertainment will feature the fast and furious Double Harness Scurry, sponsored by Osborne Refrigeration, where pairs of ponies ‘scurry’ around a twisting course pulling custom-built carriages at top speed.

The Great Yorkshire Show is sponsoring two other highlights - the Meddling Fire Glow and Fire Show, a daring act with swirling patterns of light combined with big flames choreographed to music, and Horseball, an infusion of polo, rugby and basketball on horseback, in a War of the Roses match.

Fans can enjoy behind the scenes tours, rider signings and accompanied course walks, though places now limited, while merchandise, clothing, gifts and jewellery will be on sale.

Johnny said: “I am a strong supporter of showjumping and have recently joined forces with British Showjumping, to become an ambassador for the sport.

“I’m excited to be part of a new event on home soil.”
