THE switch will be flicked to light up Sheffield for Christmas next month - but a celebrity has not yet been lined up for the event.
Real Radio, which is organising the city centre switch-on, is still searching for a personality to do the honours, although organisers promise a big name will be found.
Thousands of people flocked to the city centre last year when celebrities at the switch on were 2009 X Factor winner Joe McElderry and the band Scouting For Girls.
Meadowhall revealed it has lined up X Factor star Matt Cardle for its Christmas lights switch-on,
The Sheffield Christmas lights will be launched on the afternoon of Sunday, November 20, when there will be family fun and entertainment and the chance to meet well-known children’s characters.
City centre shops will begin opening late every Wednesday night the following week, from November 23, to make Christmas shopping easier.
And from Saturday, December 3, the extensive Craft and Christmas Market, Santa’s Grotto and traditional German bar returns on Fargate and around the Peace Gardens - although there will be no ice rink this year.
Coun Helen Mirfin-Boukouris, Sheffield City Council’s cabinet member for business, jobs and growth, said: “Christmas in Sheffield is always a magical time.
“More than 1.8 million people will visit the city centre over the festive period, taking advantage of the late night shopping on Wednesdays with many shops staying open until 8pm, and experiencing the atmosphere of the Christmas Market.
“I really hope people come and enjoy Sheffield Christmas City. Sheffield City Council wishes you a very merry Christmas.”
Also in Sheffield this Christmas, people can experience Christmas at the Botanical Gardens ‘Real Magical Christmas’ event from December 9 to 11.
The gardens will become an illuminated fairy land.
