MOTORISTS in Shirebrook are being urged to be on their guard after thieves stole two cars while they were being defrosted.
A black Vauxhall Zafira was taken from a driveway on Carter Lane and, half an hour later, a silver Volkswagen Polo was taken from a drive on Main Street. Both cars had been left unattended with the engine running.
The vehicles have since been recovered and a 33-year-old man from Sutton-in-Ashfield has been charged with theft, criminal damage to a police vehicle and drugs offences.
He has appeared at North East Derbyshire and District Magistrates Court was remanded in custody.
Community Safety Partnership Sergeant Paul Smith said: "These thefts are a sad and stark reminder that anyone can be caught out - and that your car can be stolen in a matter of seconds.
"Never leave your car unlocked or unattended with the engine running while the car is defrosting, even if it is early in the morning."
Anyone with information about the incidents between 8.30am and 9am last Thursday should call Derbyshire Police on 0345 1233333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
